1. Send your documents on time

A bookkeeper’s job is to get capture all the transactions in a business. To do that we need certain information from a business owner. If we don’t have the information our hands are tied and we are stuck.

If you can send your documents when we request them it will make our work so much easier. Better yet, if you can send all the relevant documents without us asking, we will love you even more.

It will make our job so much easier and we’ll be so much happier having you as a client.

We understand that running a business consumes all your time and energy but we would appreciate it if you could priortise the important stuff. And getting your documents to your bookkeeping on time should be one of those priorities.

2. Talk to your bookkeeper

We are here to get your books up to date so that you can know what is going on in your business.

But we need to know about financial decisions that affect your business, seeing that we are the ones who have to record it.

When you buy a car for the business or want to expand your business you have to share your plans with us.

When you want to apply for financing you need to speak to us. We have to create the reports for the financial statements needed by the financial institution, and it would help a lot if you can inform us about this before you apply for the financing. It will give us enough time to prepare the reports, especially when you are a new client that just came on board.

We are here to help you grow your business but keeping us in the dark about your plans for your business will defeat the purpose.

Communication is key, especially where money is concerned. My job is to help you make better financial decisions for your business. I’m not here to dictate how you should run your business. I can’t tell you how to spend your money. But I can make you aware of the red lights when your books don’t look good.

But for me to do that, you need to talk to me.

3. Pay your bookkeeper on time

We are running a business just like you. We are providing a service that we hope will make a difference. And we would like to be paid on time.

We also have bills to pay and a family to support. It makes a huge difference when we get paid on time. It is one of the most depressing feelings, especially when you start your business to wait for payment, and none is coming.

You know that feeling when you check your bank balance, and no money is reflected? It sucks.
Pay us on time and it will be a pleasure to do business with you.

The important thing is to have an open and honest relationship with your bookkeeper and to understand the value we bring to your business. Mutual trust and respect can go a long way in building a great relationship with your bookkeeper.

As much as I need certain things from my clients, I must be able to listen to them as well. Business is a two-way street, and with the right attitude, understanding, and willingness to listen, the relationship between a bookkeeper and a business owner can only grow and improve.
