I am Olivia and this is my dream. I knew from a very young age that I wasn't cut out for a nine-to-five job. That didn't stop me from trying though. And I failed spectacularly at being a nine-to-five person because I craved to explore and try new things. Not because of the job but because part of me always knew and believed that there's so much more to life.

I started out as an electrical fitter which means I'm trained to fix electrical locomotives. That job taught me how to think analytically and simplify things so you can find a solution. I love fixing things and it's one of the best feelings in the world to see something start-up that was dead and not working. That job also brought me to my husband, who together with a friend of his taught me how to wire houses.

We both shared a vision of being financially independent and building a sustainable business that offers real value to our customers.

After many setbacks and disappointments, Profits and Books were born. And it has nothing to do with electricity but everything to do with our dream and our vision.

Another great lack in businesses is bookkeeping. Covid-19 exposed how businesses in my country, South Africa, didn't register for Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and their workers couldn't earn an income when companies closed down. These employees have been working for years, and they couldn't even buy bread to feed their families. If the right bookkeeping processes were in place, fewer people had to suffer such hardships because it's a bookkeeping process to keep records and pay the money to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

I am an accountant, getting my qualification with the ICB (Institute for Certified Bookkeepers). I chose this career field because it offers so many possibilities but the best part is that it gives me an opportunity to keep proper financial records and to stay on the right side of the tax man.

I've been a radio presenter for an Afrikaans show about financial literacy. It was aired on RSG, a national SABC radio station in South Africa. It opened my eyes to how much information is available if you need financial recovery or if you want to become wealthy. You just need to ask the right questions and have the right goals and mindset to achieve your dreams. The more I spoke to industry leaders the more I became aware of the great need to simplify personal finances and to make it something fun and achievable for everyone. That discovery led to the Rose Tinted Glasses with Olivia Sambo, the podcasts of Profit and Books.
